(5th of Easter)
by Dr Alistair MacDonald

Acts 9:36-43.

36In Joppa there was a woman named Tabitha, who was a believer. (Her name in Greek is Dorcas, meaning “a deer”.) She spent all her time doing good and helping the poor. 37At that time she became ill and died. Her body was washed and laid in a room upstairs. 38Joppa was not very far from Lydda, and when the believers in Joppa heard that Peter was in Lydda, they sent two men to him with the message, “Please hurry and come to us.” 39So Peter got ready and went with them. When he arrived, he was taken to the room upstairs, where all the widows crowded round him, crying and showing him all the shirts and coats that Dorcas had made while she was alive. 40Peter put them all out of the room, and knelt down and prayed; then he turned to the body and said, “Tabitha, get up!” She opened her eyes, and when she saw Peter, she sat up. 41Peter reached over and helped her get up. Then he called all the believers, including the widows, and presented her alive to them. 42The news about this spread all over Joppa, and many people believed in the Lord. 43Peter stayed on in Joppa for many days with a tanner of leather named Simon.

Singing the Faith 357

Jesus The Name High Over All

Verse 1

Jesus the name high over all
In hell or earth or sky
Angels and men before it fall
And devils fear and fly
And devils fear and fly

Verse 2

Jesus the name to sinners dear
The name to sinners given
It scatters all their guilty fear
It turns their hell to heaven
It turns their hell to heaven

Verse 3

Jesus the prisoners' fetters breaks
And bruises Satan's head
Power into strengthless souls it speaks
And life into the dead
And life into the dead

Verse 4

O that the world might taste and see
The riches of His grace
The arms of love that compass me
Would all mankind embrace
Would all mankind embrace

Verse 5

His only righteousness I show
His saving grace proclaim
'Tis all my business here below
To cry behold the Lamb
To cry behold the Lamb

Verse 6

Happy if with my latest breath
I might but gasp His name
Preach Him to all and cry in death
Behold behold the Lamb
Behold behold the Lamb

Psalm 37:12-29

12The wicked plot against good people

and glare at them with hate.

13But the Lord laughs at wicked people,

because he knows they will soon be destroyed.

14The wicked draw their swords and bend their bows

to kill the poor and needy,

to slaughter those who do what is right;

15but they will be killed by their own swords,

and their bows will be smashed.

16The little that a good person owns

is worth more than the wealth of all the wicked,

17because the LORD will take away the strength of the wicked,

but protect those who are good.

18The LORD takes care of those who obey him,

and the land will be theirs for ever.

19They will not suffer when times are bad;

they will have enough in time of famine.

20But the wicked will die;

the enemies of the LORD will vanish like wild flowers;

they will disappear like smoke.

21The wicked borrow and never pay back,

but good people are generous with their gifts.

22Those who are blessed by the LORD will possess the land,

but those who are cursed by him will be driven out.

23The LORD guides people in the way they should go

and protects those who please him.

24If they fall, they will not stay down,

because the LORD will help them up.

25I am old now; I have lived a long time,

but I have never seen good people abandoned by the LORD

or their children begging for food.

26At all times they give freely and lend to others,

and their children are a blessing.

27Turn away from evil and do good,

and your descendants will always live in the land;

28for the LORD loves what is right

and does not abandon his faithful people.

He protects them for ever,

but the descendants of the wicked will be driven out.

29The righteous will possess the land

and live in it for ever.
