Acts 7:54-60

The Stoning of Stephen

54As the members of the Council listened to Stephen, they became furious and ground their teeth at him in anger. 55But Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit, looked up to heaven and saw God's glory and Jesus standing at the right-hand side of God. 56“Look!” he said. “I see heaven opened and the Son of Man standing at the right-hand side of God!”

57With a loud cry the members of the Council covered their ears with their hands. Then they all rushed at him at once, 58threw him out of the city, and stoned him. The witnesses left their cloaks in the care of a young man named Saul. 59They kept on stoning Stephen as he called out to the Lord, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit!” 60He knelt down and cried out in a loud voice, “Lord! Do not remember this sin against them!” He said this and died.

Singing the Faith 683

Great Is Our Redeeming Lord

Verse 1

Great is our redeeming Lord
In power and truth and grace
Him by highest heaven adored
His church on earth doth praise
In the city of our God
In his holy mount below
Publish spread his name abroad
And all his greatness show

Verse 2

For thy loving-kindness Lord
We in thy temple stay
Here thy faithful love record
Thy saving power display
With thy name thy praise is known
Glorious thy perfections shine
Earth's remotest bounds shall own
Thy works are all divine

Verse 3

See the gospel church secure
And founded on a rock
All her promises are sure
Her bulwarks who can shock
Count her every precious shrine
Tell to after-ages tell
Fortified by power divine
The church can never fail

Verse 4

Zion's God is all our own
Who on his love rely
We his pardoning love have known
And live to Christ and die
To the new Jerusalem
He our faithful guide shall be
Him we claim and rest in him
Through all eternity

Psalm 34:11-22

11Come, my young friends, and listen to me,

and I will teach you to honour the LORD.

12Would you like to enjoy life?

Do you want long life and happiness?

13Then hold back from speaking evil

and from telling lies.

14Turn away from evil and do good;

strive for peace with all your heart.

15The LORD watches over the righteous

and listens to their cries;

16but he opposes those who do evil,

so that when they die, they are soon forgotten.

17The righteous call to the LORD, and he listens;

he rescues them from all their troubles.

18The LORD is near to those who are discouraged;

he saves those who have lost all hope.

19Good people suffer many troubles,

but the LORD saves them from them all;

20the LORD preserves them completely;

not one of their bones is broken.

21Evil will kill the wicked;

those who hate the righteous will be punished.

22The LORD will save his people;

those who go to him for protection will be spared.
