Preached on 16th June 2020
(World Refugee Day)
by Dr Alistair MacDonald

John 3:16-21

16For God loved the world so much that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not die but have eternal life. 17For God did not send his Son into the world to be its judge, but to be its saviour.

18Those who believe in the Son are not judged; but those who do not believe have already been judged, because they have not believed in God's only Son. 19This is how the judgement works: the light has come into the world, but people love the darkness rather than the light, because their deeds are evil. 20All those who do evil things hate the light and will not come to the light, because they do not want their evil deeds to be shown up. 21But those who do what is true come to the light in order that the light may show that what they did was in obedience to God.

Singing the Faith 346

1      Christ is the world's light, Christ and none other;
        born in our darkness, he became our brother.
        If we have seen him, we have seen the Father:
        glory to God on high.

   2      Christ is the world's Peace, Christ and none other;
        no one can serve him and despise another;
        who else unites us, one in God the Father?
        Glory to God on high.

   3      Christ is the world's Life, Christ and none other;
        sold once for silver, murdered here, our brother —
        he, who redeems us, reigns with God the Father:
        glory to God on high.

   4      Give God the glory, God and none other;
        give God the glory, Spirit, Son, and Father;
        give God the glory, God with us, my brother:
        glory to God on high.

Psalm 57;1-3, 7-11

A Prayer for Help

1Be merciful to me, O God, be merciful,

because I come to you for safety.

In the shadow of your wings I find protection

until the raging storms are over.

2I call to God, the Most High,

to God, who supplies my every need.

3He will answer from heaven and save me;

he will defeat my oppressors.

God will show me his constant love and faithfulness.

7I have complete confidence, O God;

I will sing and praise you!

8Wake up, my soul!

Wake up, my harp and lyre!

I will wake up the sun.

9I will thank you, O Lord, among the nations.

I will praise you among the peoples.

10Your constant love reaches the heavens;

your faithfulness touches the skies.

11Show your greatness in the sky, O God,

and your glory over all the earth.
